Understanding your options

Two Common Ways to Receive Medicare Coverage

Both paths can provide Medicare coverage. The right fit depends on your health needs, budget, preferences, and the options available where you live.

Medicare Advantage

  1. Original Medicare eligibility
  2. Medicare Advantage plan
  3. Medical and usually prescription coverage administered through the selected plan
  • May use a provider network
  • Costs and benefits vary by plan
  • Some plans include additional benefits
  • Annual maximum out-of-pocket protection applies to covered Part A and Part B services

Original Medicare + Supplemental Coverage

  1. Original Medicare
  2. Medicare Supplement
  3. Separate Part D plan when needed
  • Medicare Supplement helps with certain Original Medicare cost-sharing
  • Prescription drug coverage is generally selected separately
  • Premiums and underwriting rules can vary
  • Provider access depends on Medicare participation

Helpful starting points

Common Medicare Questions

A few clear answers before your first conversation.

What is the difference between Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement?

Medicare Advantage is another way to receive Medicare-covered services through a private plan. Medicare Supplement works alongside Original Medicare to help with certain cost-sharing.

Do Medicare Supplement plans include prescription coverage?

Generally, newer Medicare Supplement policies do not include outpatient prescription drug coverage. A separate Part D plan may be considered.

Can you help me review my doctors and prescriptions?

Yes. A coverage review can include your current provider and prescription lists, although networks and formularies can change.

When can I change my Medicare coverage?

Available enrollment periods depend on your current coverage and circumstances. Confirm the applicable dates before making a change.

Are ancillary insurance products required?

No. Dental, vision, hearing and other ancillary policies are optional products that are separate from Original Medicare.

Is there a cost to schedule an initial coverage review?

No. There is no charge to schedule an initial coverage review, and there is no obligation to enroll. The conversation is simply an opportunity to review your Medicare and related coverage options and ask questions.
